1. Introduction to Abrasive Wheels & Associated Hazards

Understand what abrasive wheels are and where they are commonly used Identify the different types of abrasive wheels and grinding machines Recognise common safety and health hazards such as wheel burst, dust, noise, vibration, and fire Understand the legal responsibilities of employers and employees under Irish legislation

2. Risk Assessment for Abrasive Wheel Operations

  • Understand the purpose and importance of workplace risk assessments
  • Identify hazards associated with abrasive wheel operations
  • Recognise who may be harmed and how during grinding and cutting activities
  • Evaluate existing controls and identify additional measures required to reduce risks

3. Safe Practices for Abrasive Wheels

  • Apply safe procedures for storing, handling, mounting, and using abrasive wheels
  • Understand wheel speed markings and maximum operating speed requirements
  • Carry out pre-use inspections, ring testing, and machine safety checks
